💡 Why Write Poems About School Memories?
End-of-year reflection is a powerful literacy activity — it helps children process experiences, celebrate learning, and express emotions creatively.
Funny school poems also support oracy and performance skills — pupils love acting them out and exaggerating the humour.

🚽 Poem Example 1: Tony Loves The Toilets!
by Ian Bland
They say he disappears and stays in there for years
He just ignores the bell, he doesn’t mind the smell
Tony Loves The Toilets!
Tony Loves The Toilets!
The teacher said ‘no more!’, but Tony slammed the door
He’s just not in a rush he likes to stay and flush!
Tony Loves The Toilets!
Tony Loves The Toilets!
He loves it on his own, that cubicle’s his home
He stays in there to hide, he just won’t go outside!
Tony Loves The Toilets!
Tony Loves The Toilets!
Although he’s getting thinner he won’t come out for dinner
He likes the toilets best, it’s like his new address!
Tony Loves The Toilets!
Tony Loves The Toilets!
He takes his mobile phone and sits there on the throne
The infants stop and stare but Tony doesn’t care!
Tony Loves The Toilets!
Tony Loves The Toilets!
The head came in last week and found him fast asleep
It must be kind of boring but Tony’s in there snoring!
Tony Loves The Toilets!
Tony Loves The Toilets!
They bring food on a tray even when it’s Xmas day
They even tried a winch — he didn’t move an inch!
Tony Loves The Toilets!
Tony Loves The Toilets!
His parents disapprove but Tony just won’t move
They sent the SAS — they left without success!
Tony Loves The Toilets!
Tony Loves The Toilets!
The army have been called to get him re-installed
He just ignored their judging ’cos Tony’s not for budging!

1. Call-and-Response Performance
Perfect for assemblies! One group chants the verses, another shouts “TONY LOVES THE TOILETS!”
Add percussion (buckets, bin lids, rhythm sticks) for comic effect.
2. Character Writing Task
Ask pupils to invent their own eccentric school characters — “Sally Steals the Stationery,” “Gary Loves the Glue Sticks,” etc.
3. Display Idea
Illustrate each character and create a “Hall of Fame” of funny school memories.

🧃 Poem Example 2: What Did We Find in Phillip’s Tray?
by Ian Bland
Some chewing gum all covered in hair
The teeth and claws of a grizzly bear,
Some underpants just barely clean
The smelliest sock I’ve ever seen,
A mobile phone (the battery’s dead)
A green and mouldy piece of bread,
Some Milky Way all covered in fluff
Some greeny bluey slimey stuff,
A maths book covered in stains and smears
A rusty pair of garden shears,
A bottle of bleach some cartridge inks
Some squishy stuff that frankly stinks,
Farmyard dung that’s dried rock hard
A seven-year-old Christmas card,
A valentine written to a teacher
A ratty, mousy kind of creature,
A Wii Fit game, a PS2
A calculator covered in… glue,
A severed head all dripping blood
PE shorts all covered in mud,
A pack of cards, a box of eggs
A Buzz Lightyear without his legs,
Some felt-tip pens, a knife and fork
A Pritt Stick and a piece of chalk,
Some beetles crawling on a pen —
Go in there?
NEVER AGAIN!!!
💡 Activity Ideas
1. Rhyme & Gross-Out Game!
Children brainstorm funny or disgusting classroom objects and build rhyming couplets. Encourage humour and exaggeration.
2. Writing Frame Extension
Give them a template starting “What did we find in ___’s tray?” and let each group fill in their own weird discoveries.
3. Performance Challenge
Add dramatic pauses and rising disgust — pupils love performing this poem as a comedy sketch.

🐵 Poem Example 3: April Fool In School!
by Ian Bland
Miss Hall come quick
I swear it’s true
A MONKEY
In the infants loo!
And over in the library
A CROCODILE
Is drinking tea!
SOME SEALS
Are swimming in the hall
They’re playing with a basketball!
And in the corridor I swear
The most enormous
GRIZZLY BEAR!
Is this all happening in our school?
Of course it’s not you —
APRIL FOOL!
💡 Activity Ideas
1. April Fool’s Imagination Game
Ask pupils to write their own “crazy school day” poems — every line more ridiculous than the last!
2. Performance Extension
Act out with props or mime. Add silly sound effects for each animal or event.
3. Cross-Curricular Link
Tie in with Science (animals & habitats) or PSHE (humour and friendship).

🐜 Poem Example 4: Who’s Got Nits?
by Ian Bland
It isn’t me or my best mate Sam
And I’m fairly sure
It’s not that new girl Pam,
He’s well turned out
So it can’t be Fritz —
But someone in our class,
Well, they’ve got NITS!
It can’t be Ben,
I’d be shocked if it’s Fleur,
And it can’t be Sean —
He’s got no hair!
It’s never Abbie,
She’s far too nice,
But someone in our class,
Well, they’ve got LICE!
It won’t be Stan
And it’s sooo not Kath —
Her sister says
She lives in the bath!
It’s just not Chloe
And it can’t be Clive,
But someone in our class,
Well, their hair is ALIVE!
If it’s none of us,
Then who can it be?
What about our teacher —
Miss Dundee??
What’s the answer?
What are we to do?
Because someone in our class —
Well, they need nit SHAMPOO!
💡 Activity Ideas
1. Performance Poetry Fun
Perform in groups with exaggerated reactions — itching, scratching, gasping!
Add sound effects for dramatic comedy.
2. Rhyme & Repetition Focus
Use this to teach rhyme, rhythm, and anaphora (“It can’t be…”).
3. PSHE Link
Discuss hygiene and self-care lightly — turning an embarrassing topic into laughter.
