What Is a WAGOLL in Poetry?
WAGOLL stands for What A Good One Looks Like.
In poetry teaching, a WAGOLL is a model poem that helps pupils to:
understand expectations
see how language choices work
borrow techniques safely
gain confidence before writing independently
Put simply:
Children write better poems when they can see one first.

Why Poetry WAGOLLs Matter (Especially in KS2)
Many pupils struggle with poetry because:
it feels vague or abstract
they’re unsure what success looks like
they fear “getting it wrong”
A strong model text:
reduces cognitive load
supports reluctant writers
improves vocabulary choices
leads to more confident independent writing
This is particularly important for:
ECTs and non-specialists
mixed-ability classes
pupils with SEND or EAL
assessment confidence
A Common Mistake with Model Poems 🚫
One quick warning.
A WAGOLL is not something pupils should copy word for word.
Instead, it should be used to:
notice techniques
magpie ideas
adapt structure
The teacher’s role is to guide attention — not hand over a template and hope for the best.

How to Use a Poetry WAGOLL Effectively
Here’s a simple, classroom-tested approach.
1. Read for Enjoyment First
Read the poem aloud — with energy.
No analysis. Just listening.
Ask:
What did you like?
What stood out?
2. Read Again — This Time as Writers
Now ask pupils to look more closely.
Prompt with questions like:
Which words create strong images?
Where does the poem surprise you?
How does the ending work?
This builds writerly reading skills.
3. Spotlight One or Two Techniques
Don’t analyse everything.
Choose one focus, such as:
repetition
imagery
line length
verb choice
Too much analysis kills momentum.
4. Shared Writing (Very Short!)
Write one new line together using the same technique.
Model:
thinking aloud
rejecting weaker ideas
choosing better words
This shows pupils how writers think.
5. Independent Writing
Now pupils write their own poems:
different topic
same technique
their own voice
That’s where confidence grows.
